This recent work is a visual combination of botanical life and improvised imagery that reference current human and natural events. These paintings may be referred to as “Quasi-Botanical” because they turn toward a traditionally surrealist or lyrical interpretation of the environment using botanical forms metaphorically. Leaves, trees, rhizomes and microorganisms interweave into a dual dimensioned landscape where they perform on a psychic plane somewhere between the microscopic and macroscopic worlds…a semi-aquatic and quasi-botanic surrealist stage if you will. Directly, sprouting leaves are metaphors for rejuvenation, hope, and redemption in our present intersection with Nature. Pollock made the insightful remark that “…man is nature”, and yet at times we seem to be the invasive species impressing significant stresses into the ecosystem. I have compositionally worked leaves and interconnected sub-structures toward a process of absorption, healing and renewal. I want my work to be life affirmative, and a pictorial gesture toward future healing and understanding.

NYPH’12 will explore the matrix of art photography and social documentary through four curators creating sites and live events exploring the origins and meeting points of art photography and documentary work:

Glenn Ruga will premiere a phenomenal collection of masterworks from Bruce Davidson, Reza, Eugene Richards, Rina Castelnuovo, and Platon walking the fine line between doc art—or art doc—in On the Razor’s Edge: Between Documentary and Fine Art Photography

Amy Smith-Stewart will debut a smashing curated show entitled What Do You Believe In, featuring a select group of of sixteen artists— Jen DeNike, Hank Willis Thomas, Leah Beeferman, Stuart Hawkins, Yamini Nayar, Fay Ray, Luke Stettner, Anissa Mack, Kenya Robinson, Xaviera Simmons, Nicole Cherubini, Nyeema Morgan, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Matthew Spiegelman, Daniel Gordon, Ignacio Lang—and explores how photography shapes our ideas—who we are, why we do the things we do, how our thinking happens, and where it evolves.

Claude Grunitzky will delight the senses and the imagination with work from Evangelia Kranioti, Irmelie Krekin, and Christian Witkin in the Curse and the Gift: “Photography is a way of life, and as we all become touch-screen photographers, emailing and Facebooking away, art photography takes on an entirely new meaning in its role in helping us to understand the way we live now. With our modern societies in flux, and many forms of cohesion in jeopardy, it helps to reflect on those changing human dynamics by looking at images that were composed calmly, away from the pressure of instant delivery.”

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid will stupefy the senses with Sinfonia Antarctica (The Book of Ice). For the New York Photo Festival, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky takes a look at how the role of the “archive” of Antarctic history—in photography, graphic design, and contemporary composition—has shaped some of the ways we think about contemporary digital media aesthetics. In conjunction with NYPH’12, Miller will present material from his recent Book of Ice project through the prism of an intersection of sculpture, architecture, live performance, moving image, and digital media installation.

They will also feature juried work from the New York Photo Festival Invitational, an online submission-based review platform run by the festival. More information available at http://nyph.at/

John Chamberlain’s twisted metal sculptures line the Guggenheim’s spiraling rotunda like spikes on a cactus. Made from automotive scrap, the prefab shapes are folded, bent, twisted, and riveted into hulking forms. The sculptures look heavy, dense and brutish, beholden to gravity. Recognizable shapes appear in the tangled masses, betraying their origins as a fender, bumper, or door. There’s a clear affinity with Abstract Expressionism’s grand gestures and monolithic stubbornness but there’s also a lighter, more lyrical side to his work.

Chamberlain’s smaller pieces show a greater involvement with form and tend to be more varied in their sculptural movements. There’s greater definition in the shapes probably due to the technical limitations of working in this medium at large scale. The work’s titles also show a poetic nature and tend to be more about wordplay than descriptions of form: White Thumb Four, Rooster Starfoot, Sphinxgrin Two, Belvo-Violet. Color also makes a surprising appearance, while many of the pieces retain their original automotive colors there are sprays and drips of pigment that have been clearly added by the artist. Some works prominently feature the garish metallic flake colors favored by custom car finishers in the 70s.

American themes run throughout Chamberlain’s work. The choice of materials reflects the peak of industrialization and an association with the myth of the highway and Western expansionism. Although his sculptures are industrial in nature they mostly retain a human scale. The least successful works in the exhibition are based on small pieces of aluminum foil twisted into tubes and then enlarged to a point beyond recognition. The automotive pieces are surprisingly intimate – you can walk around them and easily encompass their shapes. Perhaps the most American theme of his work is reinvention. He took scrap and made art.

WAGMAG Celebrates 11 Years!!
Please help support our mission to promote the arts in Brooklyn. WAGMAG, Brooklyn Art Guide is a 501c (3) nonprofit, and the only Brooklyn art guide that chronicles the art activities of art venues in Brooklyn, on a monthly basis.

This is a great event for art lovers in the area, with approximately 100 pieces of artwork generously donated by local galleries and artists for the raffle during the event evening, Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 from 7-9pm. The resulting exhibition will not only generate much needed funding for WAGMAG but also reflect the spirit and personality of the Brooklyn art community. It will be held at The Boiler, 191 North 14th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. There will be a festive atmosphere with food, drinks, and a wonderful selection of artworks from prominent artists in Brooklyn.

Advanced raffle tickets – $200
Tickets purchased after May 6th – $225

Each raffle ticket guarantees an artwork. Artwork will be selected on the benefit evening by a raffle-style drawing, which determines the order in which ticketholders make their selection.

Tickets for the artwork raffle are available for $200 up until May 6th, after which tickets will be available for $225 each. Any remaining tickets for the artwork raffle will be $225 on the event evening, as availability permits. Each ticket guarantees a work of art. There will be an entrance fee for admission to the benefit event of $20 for non-ticket holders.

Lower East Side Printshop is pleased to announce the Editions ‘12: EXHIBITION OPENING AND CATALOGUE LAUNCH on Thursday, May 10. The exhibition will be on view at the Printshop from May 10 – July 8, 2012. With a catalogue essay by Roberta Waddell, a renowned print expert and former Curator of Prints at the New York Public Library, the catalogue and exhibition feature new works created by recipients of the Printshop’s Special Editions and Publishing Residencies: Hong Seon Jang, Jennie C. Jones, Darina Karpov, and David Kramer, and Enoc Perez.

The Special Editions Residency provides emerging artists with an opportunity to create a major new body of work in collaboration with Master Printers Erik Hougen and James Miller, fully sponsored by the Printshop. Hong Seon Jang, Jennie C. Jones, Darina Karpov, and David Kramer have all immersed themselves in printmaking for several months, exploring new materials and techniques that have broadened their practice. What followed were outstanding projects of conceptual and technical expertise that showcase the artists’ most ambitious print projects to date.

Enoc Perez created the Lever House suite through the Printshop’s exclusive Publishing Residency Program, also working with Dusica Kirjakovic, Erik Hougen, and James Miller. Continuing his exploration of modernist buildings and their architectural allure, both symbolically and aesthetically, Perez has revisited the distinguished New York City Lever House building as subject. Ultimately, these prints offer both a bold point of view and a sense of effortless completion.

The Printshop’s residency programs offer opportunities to artists of all career stages to use professional facilities and collaborate with talented printers who approach each artist’s vision with great care and skill.

Mighty Tanaka Presents Shifting Perspectives, a solo show by Alexandra Pacula

Opens Friday, May 11th, 6pm – 9pm

The Manhattan Bridge, standing like a proud cobalt giant, stretching its outreached arms to connect two landscapes and bring people together. With feet of stone resting peacefully in the muddy waters of the East River, the steel structure radiates with an electric individuality that beams across boroughs. This symbolic artery of New York City possesses an astute flair of personality that serves as an inspiration and muse to the people who are lucky enough to be touched by its magic. Mighty Tanaka is proud to bring you our next show, Shifting Perspectives, a solo exhibition featuring the artwork of Alexandra Pacula, as she interprets the vibrant nuances of this world recognized landmark.

Shifting Perspectives exemplifies Alexandra Pacula’s trademark style of painting dubbed “Visual Intoxication”. The abstract yet photo realist nature of her work provides dynamic movement to an otherwise stationary object, allowing it to come to life and move freely around the canvas. A virtual vortex of light and motion envelops the artwork, which tempts the eye and draws in the viewer.

With a confident hand, Alexandra Pacula demonstrates the expansive versatility of her technique through the inspirational power of her subject matter. Her ability to manipulate oil paint into a highly complex and mind bending experience solidifies the various Shifting Perspectives of her artwork.

A plywood facsimile of a city street dominates the entrance to this year’s Pulse Art Fair. ‘City Surface’ by Lead Pencil Studio recreates objects from a typical city street in plywood, reproducing the hobbled-together clutter of an urban environment that functions through an unlikely combination of elements. This piece is the perfect metaphor for art fairs which collect an ungainly mass of elements into one setting. The logistics of art fairs are daunting: too many exhibitors in too small of a space with too many viewers trying to squeeze past each other to view too much art. Pulse managed to balance all of these contradictory elements.

The exhibitors trended towards work that explored craftsmanship with a strong showing of painting – including a collection of small abstractions by Andrew Masullo (currently in the Whitney Biennial) at Daniel Weinberg Gallery and Michelle Muldrow’s paintings of abstracted store aisles at Jen Bekman Gallery.

The taxidermy horse sculpture with giant anime eyes and roller skates for hooves entitled “Cupcake” by the artist Tinkebell at Torch Gallery of Amsterdam was a huge draw. Its neighbor in the next booth, the figures of “Brighton Beach Bench” by Will Kurtz at Mike Weiss Gallery, was a group of life-sized figures covered with collaged magazine pages. There was an element of subverted realism to both pieces that was heightened by their unplanned and unrelated proximity to each other.

Carrie Secrist Gallery showed colored pencil works by Anne Lindberg that were accompanied by a matching sculpture composed of colored thread stretched across the booth. The thread appeared to be drawn lines that playfully distorted vision from a distance.

The Impulse section of the fair featured emerging galleries and solo artist shows. Brooklyn was represented by Black and White Gallery featuring sculptures by Peter Brock, Causey Contemporary representing Jordan Eagles, and Porter/Contemporary showing paintings by Jason Bryant which combined images from classic cinema with skateboard graphics.
