To kick off 2018, Opera Gallery proudly presents an exhibition dedicated entirely to the art of portraiture in their flagship venue on New York’s Madison Avenue.

Curated entirely from Opera Gallery’s global collection of works from galleries in London, Paris, Monaco, Geneva, Beirut, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Dubai, Miami and Aspen, this major exhibition runs from January 19 through February 8 at Opera Gallery New York, 791 Madison Avenue.

A favored subject of artists throughout history, the portrait is as relevant as ever in an era where identity and the portrayal of the individual seem to be at the center of discourse, introspection and technology. In response, Opera Gallery has brought together works from over 30 significant artists from the modern and contemporary era, from Pablo Picasso’s semi abstract painted portrait of a woman, Raoul Dufy’s ambiguous portrait of a boy, Andy Warhol’s famous ‘Jackie’, Alex Katz’ vast and enigmatic ‘Ulla’, Keith Haring’s playful ‘Sneeze’ and Yue Minjun’s wildly exaggerated ‘Everywhere’ highlighting a handful of masterpieces from an exhibition which also includes important works from Jean Dubuffet, Antonio Seguí, Bernard Buffet, Tom Wesselmann, Takashi Murakami and David LaChapelle. Contemporary highlights also include sculpture and painting from Manolo Valdés, Yigal Ozeri’s hyperrealistic depictions of young female faces, David Kim Whittaker’s internal portraits of the human condition, Joe Black’s intricate pop collages, Andy Denzler’s depictions showing a fragile duel presence and absence and David Mach’s perplexing and intricate ‘coat hanger’ sculpture of Albert Einstein alongside a host of other participants.
According to Gilles Dyan, Chairman of Opera Gallery, “With this remarkable collection on display, PORTRAIT is an exhibition that profoundly embodies the spirit of Opera Gallery – our determination to bridge the gap between accessibility and excellence for the new and established art collector. We are delighted to be able to bring these works together.”

This exhibition celebrates this ‘changing face’ at the core of the human experience.

A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies the exhibition and is available online at operagallery.com
