The Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour (AGAST) is a volunteer and artist run organization.

2012 Gowanus Open Studios will take place:

2012 is the 16th year that artists around the Gowanus Canal will open their studios to the public.

Gowanus is at the juncture of Park Slope and Carroll Gardens, near Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill and Red Hook. It’s accessible by foot, bike, kayak, LIRR, bus and subway.

We believe artists are vital to the fabric of civic life, that our work reflects back values and concerns, cracking open imaginations, provoking thoughtfulness and impulse, reminding us to enjoy and engage. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Brooklyn is one of the world’s most important art-producing areas and the tour, running through industrial buildings, garages, brownstones and warehouses, is a chance to see some of the variety of what Gowanus area artists are creating (painting, sculpture, installations, photography, kinetic, conceptual, drawing, printmaking, video, ceramics, mixed-media, etc.). We’re a melting pot of aspiring, professional, and amateur artists; our work is avant-garde, craft-influenced, naïve, formally trained, prim, conceptual, whacked out.

A community gets the art it deserves. Visitors to open studios participate in a give and take, engaging with working artists one-on-one in the intimacy of our studios where you can buy art, experience Brooklyn’s contemporary visual culture, see the creative process, discuss method, and be part of an environment in which art is created.

We hope you’ll find something you love. We hope you’ll be inspired to create.
