AIR: selected works by Laura Newman

January 28, 2011 – May 15, 2011

Opening Reception
Friday, January 28th from 6 to 8pm
1 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, NY 11238

The 1 Grand Army Plaza (1 GAP) Art Committee in collaboration with curator Isolde Brielmaier is pleased to present the latest art installment at The Gallery @1 GAP, AIR, featuring selected works by painter Laura Newman.

The 1GAP Art Committee has developed an in-house art program that seeks to contribute to the creative culture and energy of Brooklyn with three contemporary art exhibitions each year. Many of the exhibitions will be oriented toward supporting and showcasing the work of Brooklyn artists. Laura Newman is the first artist in the 2011 series.

AIR is a solo exhibition by the artist that presents a cross-section of her work from 2006 through the present. Drawing inspiration from windows, objects that are both looked at and looked through, Newman uses glass walls and billboards as points of departure for what are essentially abstract paintings in which flat fields of color evoke deep space.  And as an installation in architect Richard Meier’s Brooklyn building, Newman’s work maintains a relationship to modernist architecture—its light, space, lines and shapes.
